Woodstock

  • First appearance: April 4, 1967
  • The fluttering, sometimes sputtering, little yellow bird is Snoopy’s sidekick, whether it’s as faithful mechanic to the World War I Flying Ace, stalwart secretary to the Head Beagle, or root beer drinking buddy. Chirping in a language only Snoopy understands, Woodstock and his feathered friends are never far from Snoopy’s doghouse.

  • Did you know: Woodstock was first seen in the strip in 1967 but was named in 1970 after the summer music festival.

First appearance: May 28th, 1990 Woodstock follows behind the World Famous Naturalist. Snoopy thinks, "Here's the World Famous Naturalist going out on a bird-counting walk . . ." Snoopy whirls around with his binoculars and points to Woodstock. Snoopy thinks, "There's one!!" Snoopy giggles and thinks, "Woodstock hates bird-counting jokes . ." Woodstock is mad. Latest appearance: July 11th, 2002 / First appearance: July 13th, 1972 Snoopy and Woodstock stand next to a tree and look up. Snoopy thinks, "If you can't climb a tree, the obvious thing to do is to get a ladder . ." Snoopy walks away. Snoopy walks back and carries a step ladder over his head. Snoopy stands on the ladder. Woodstock runs toward the edge of the doghouse. Woodstock jumps off the doghouse toward Snoopy's water dish. Woodstock lands in the water dish and makes a big splash. Woodstock climbs out of the water dish. Snoopy thinks, "That was a good swan for a non-swan." Snoopy thinks, "The big dog said to the little dog, 'Have you met the new cat who lives next door?'" Snoopy holds his arms out and thinks, "'Yes, I talked to him yesterday,' said the little dog. 'Did you talk to him in person?' asked the big dog . . . 'No,' said the little dog . . 'I talked to him in cat!'" Snoopy laughs hysterically. "Here, bird...I brought you some bread crumbs..." She kneels. She says, "Pardon my fingers, as they say.." Woodstock leans towards Peppermint Patty. They sit there. "BLEAH!" says Woodstock and turns away. Pepermint Patty watches as Woodstock walks away. Snoopy thinks, "No, Olivier, whales very seldom come up on shore, and attack you." First appearance: January 5th, 1991 Snoopy sits on his doghouse reading a paper. Woodstock sits beside him looking the other way. Snoopy thinks, "It says here that the duck population has declined . . ." Woodstock speaks. Snoopy says, "No, I realize that doesn't affect you . ." Snoopy thinks, "Only if you intend to marry a duck . ." First appearance: April 1st, 1988 Woodstock and Snoopy sit on the doghouse. Snoopy looks at Woodstock and thinks, "Have you ever thought that maybe you're a 'ruby-crowned kinglet'?" Snoopy holds a book and says, "It says in my bird book that kinglets 'nervously twitch their wings . . And always seem to be in motion.'" Woodstock sleeps. Snoopy thinks, "No, I guess you're not a kinglet . ." First appearance: August 28th, 1975 Woodstock flies and carries a string in his mouth. Linus and Sally stand in the grass and look up. Sally asks, "Why do birds need so much string when they're building a nest?" Linus and Sally walk in the grass. Linus replies, "I'm sure I don't know." Woodstock swings on a swing hanging from his nest. First appearance: January 2nd, 1998 Woodstock and Snoopy sit on the roof of the dog house. It's snowing. Snoopy says, "See how gently the snowflakes float to the ground?" A snowflake bonks Woodstock on the head. Snoopy says, "Well, most of them." Spike thinks, "When I was little and my stomach hurt, Mom used to bring me milk and honey . ." Spike thinks, "If I had an earache, my dad used to blow cigar smoke in my ear . ." Woodstock knows that he is very small and inconsequential indeed. It’s a problem we all have. The universe boggles us…Woodstock is a lighthearted expression of that idea.
