Charlie Brown Around Town raises $459,000 in live auction

Highest bid went for $30,000 for a Tom Everhart design

November 4, 2001, Saint Paul, MN---- The Charlie Brown Around Town live auction at the Mall of America (Bloomington, MN) netted a grand total of $459,000 to cap off a second summer-long tribute to Saint Paul's native son, Charles M. Schulz. The highest bid went for the unique "Yellow, Purple, Red and Green in Designer Hat Charlie Brown" designed by renowned artist Tom Everhart. Everhart is the only person aside from Charles Schulz ever licensed to draw the Peanuts characters.

The "Patriotic Charlie Brown", designed especially for the auction after the events of September 11th, went for $12,000. All of the proceeds from "Patriotic Charlie Brown" went to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. A portion of all auction proceeds will go to the fund, as well. The remaining dollars will go towards the permanent bronze tribute to Schulz to be located in downtown Saint Paul, and to scholarship funds at the Art Instruction School in Minneapolis, as well as the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul.

More than 65 bidders were on hand for the auction, with a third of those registering for the $150 bidding paddles on site. Sotheby's was once again the auction house of record for this event. Sotheby's conducted last year's live auction featuring Snoopy statues that raised more than $800,000.

Officials say nearly 700,000 visitors from all 50 states and 59 countries have shared in this year's Charlie Brown Around Town. An estimated 450,000 people visited Saint Paul last year for a glimpse of Snoopy.

The City of Saint Paul, Capital City Partnership, the Saint Paul Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Tivoli,Too Design and Sculpting Studios have joined forces to create these summer celebrations. Tivoli,Too made all of the statues, while local artists decorated each one to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
